Profile picture guide

Halloween Profile Picture Maker

Most Halloween profile pictures fail for one reason: they look great at full size and like mud as a circle. Upload a photo, pick one of the four looks built for the crop below, then use Avatar crop to square it and check the circle preview before you download. Each image uses one look from your pack; cropping is free.

Why the circle ruins most edits

A profile picture gets cropped to a circle roughly 100 pixels wide on a phone. Four things disappear at that size:

  • Backgrounds. A busy porch scene turns into noise. What survives is one subject and one light.
  • Small details. Cobwebs, candy, tiny bats: gone. Only the horn and the eyes read.
  • Low contrast. Purple on black looks moody full-size and flat as an avatar. Warm orange on cold blue is what survives.
  • Full-body shots. Cropped to a head, a full-body costume becomes an unrecognizable orange blob.

The fix is not a fancier edit. It is choosing the look that survives the crop.

Looks that work as a circle

Skeleton Unicorn Makeup: a bone-white face against a dark ground and a tight crop. The most legible option if you want scary and not cute.

Pastel Zombie Unicorn: mint hair, one soft glowing horn and a big pale moon. Bright enough to survive 64 pixels.

Moonlit Haunted Fair: a hooded head-and-shoulders crop with one warm light behind it. Reads at any size.

Porch Pumpkin Onesie: a white unicorn hood against glowing pumpkins. Friendly, high-contrast and unmistakably Halloween.

These four render as squares with the face filling the frame. Looks that show a full figure or a whole room (Midnight Candle Gown, Haunted Ballroom Waltz, Clockwork Automaton and most of the Couples & Duos category) are wonderful at full size and tend to blur at avatar size. Avatar crop can zoom in on the face of a taller look, but the image is only 1024 pixels wide, so a face cut out of a full figure comes out soft. Use those looks for posts and invitations instead.

The four-step version

  1. Upload a photo where your head fills the middle third. Not a full-body shot. Daylight, no heavy filter, eyes visible.
  2. Pick one of the four looks above.
  3. Square it with Avatar crop. Open the image in My images and choose Avatar crop. Drag so the face, and the horn, sit inside the circle, then zoom until your face fills about half of it. The circle preview is what people will actually see; the corners are not.
  4. Download and upload as is. Leave File shape on Square and Size on 1024 px, download, and upload the file without editing it again. Every platform re-crops your square to a circle from the centre, so the four corners are the part that disappears. Keep anything that matters away from them.

Think of your square as a circle

A square avatar is almost never shown as a square. Instagram, Discord, TikTok and WhatsApp all crop it to a circle from the centre, so the four corners are the part that goes. Put your face in the middle, leave the horn room, and treat the corners as decoration only. If a detail matters, such as a tiny bat, a name tag or the ear of a pet, move it towards the centre before you save.

Avatar crop can also export a circle-shaped PNG with nothing in the corners. That is worth using only on a site that displays avatars as a circle and keeps transparency, such as a blog author box or a forum profile. Many sites re-encode uploads, and transparent corners can come out white or black, so if you are not sure, leave it on Square.

For a couple, a group chat, or a pet

Couples: the Couples & Duos category takes a photo of two people. For matching avatars instead, generate each person with the same look in the same session so the lighting matches.

Group chats: generate a set at once, with the same look, so the avatars read as a set instead of eight unrelated pictures.

Pets: the horn lands where the ears are, which is why pet versions work better than people expect. Side-on photos in good light give the cleanest result, and the Pets category has six looks built for fur.

What makes it read as Halloween and not just unicorn

Three things separate the two, and they all matter more at avatar size:

Orange against deep purple. Ordinary unicorn imagery is pink and lilac. Halloween versions knock the pinks back and run warm orange into cold purple. That contrast is what keeps a 100-pixel circle from turning into a pink smudge.

The horn is the light source. In the versions that work, the horn is the brightest thing in the frame and the light spills out from it.

One thing slightly wrong. A skeleton marking, a slightly-too-wide smile, a costume that fits badly. The Halloween versions have one detail that is not cute. There is more on that in the creepy unicorn guide.

Cost and your photo

Each generated image uses one look from your pack, whichever design you choose, and a failed generation does not use one. Cropping and downloading are free. Look packs are on the pricing page.

This tool is for adults. Photos of children cannot be used, and a checkbox at upload confirms it. Your photo is used to generate your image, and you can remove your generations from My images at any time.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a Halloween profile picture be?

1024 by 1024 pixels, which is the largest Avatar crop exports and well above the size an avatar is displayed at on a phone. Choose 512 px only if you want a smaller file. What matters more than the pixel count is placement: the face and the horn need to sit inside the circle.

Is there a free option?

Creating an account is free. Each generated image costs one look, and the one-time look packs are listed on the pricing page.

Will it work on Instagram, Discord and TikTok?

Yes. All three crop a square to a circle from the centre, so one square file from Avatar crop works on all of them, and on WhatsApp, Slack and Google accounts too.

Does cropping cost extra?

No. Nothing is deducted until an image is generated. Cropping, re-cropping and downloading are free, so you can try a square, then a circle, then a tighter zoom without using another one.

Is circle better than square?

Square is the safer choice. Most platforms round a square off for you from the centre, so nothing is lost. Pick circle only for a site you know keeps transparency in the corners.

Will the square version be blurrier than the original?

Avatar crop takes the square out of the full generated file, not out of the on-screen preview. Zooming in far enough will soften it, because a smaller part of the picture is enlarged to fill the file, so zoom only as far as you need.

Can I use it as a couple or group photo?

Yes. Generate the images in one session with the same look so the lighting and palette match.

Can I make one of my kid?

No. This is an 18+ tool and photos of children cannot be used.

Is this an official tool for any film?

No. It is an independent fan-made generator, not affiliated with or endorsed by any film or studio.
